A CloudConvert alternative that keeps your video on your device

CloudConvert is an online converter for more than 200 formats, from documents and ebooks to images, audio and video, with an API for developers. It converts on its own servers. Shycut does one part of that job, video, and does it in your browser: the file is read and written on your own device, with no upload, no daily allowance and no account.

When CloudConvert is the better choice

If the file is not a video, such as a Word document, a PDF, an ebook, a camera RAW photo or a CAD drawing, CloudConvert converts it and Shycut does not. It also lets you set the codec and bitrate of each conversion yourself.

If you want conversions inside your own software, or files that go straight from Amazon S3 and back, its API and SDKs are built for that. Shycut has no API.

When Shycut is the better choice

If you are wondering whether a video is safe to upload, the simplest answer is not to upload it. Shycut converts on your own device, so a clip of your family, your home or your workplace never sits on anyone’s server, not even for a few hours, and the saved copy leaves out the original’s location and device tags.

There is no daily count, no 1 GB cap and no queue: a recording of several gigabytes is limited only by your device’s memory and free space. Once the app has loaded, it opens without a connection. And if the video needs more than a new format, such as faces blurred, captions or silences cut, the same tool does that too.

Questions

Is it safe to convert a video on CloudConvert?

CloudConvert says each conversion runs in an isolated container, files are deleted after processing (after 24 hours at the latest) and its company is ISO 27001 certified. The file still travels to its servers. If you would rather it didn’t, Shycut converts the video on your own device.

Can Shycut convert documents or photos?

No. Shycut opens videos (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and M4V are tested) and saves them as a video, a GIF, the sound alone or a single frame. For PDFs, Office files, photos or ebooks, use a general converter such as CloudConvert.

Is there a file size limit in Shycut?

Not from Shycut. Nothing is uploaded, so the only limits are your device’s memory and free space. Long videos are fastest on a computer.

Does Shycut work offline?

After your first visit the app is kept in your browser and opens without a connection, so you can convert on a train or a locked-down network. A few optional parts download the first time they are needed.
