The limit, from the source
- Discord
- 20 MiB: All users; more with Nitro or a boosted server.
- What Shycut aims at
- 20 MB, since 20 MiB is 20.97 MB: with 4% kept spare, the file lands under it however the limit is counted.
What fits in 20 MB
| Picture | At full quality | Longest that fits |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 26 s | 58 s |
| 720p | 58 s | 2 min 4 s |
| 540p | 1 min 40 s | 3 min 24 s |
| 480p | 2 min 4 s | 4 min 21 s |
| 360p | 3 min 24 s | 6 min 52 s |
Shycut’s own sums for a 16:9 video at 30 frames a second with sound, at Balanced quality. “Full quality” keeps the bitrate Balanced would use anyway; past “longest that fits”, Shycut makes the picture smaller instead of letting it break up. An upright video fits the same.
Your video, by length
| Length | Comes out as |
|---|---|
| 30 s | 1080p, 4,992 kbps for the picture |
| 1 min | 720p, 2,432 kbps for the picture |
| 3 min | 540p, 725 kbps for the picture |
| 10 min | Too long: up to 6 min 52 s fits |
For a 1080p video at 30 frames a second with sound. The save window does the same sum for your own video before anything is made.
Sending clips on Discord
Game clips, screen recordings and phone videos usually start well over the limit. Compressing them before sending keeps the whole clip, instead of cutting it short to make it fit.
Older limits are still repeated in searches and videos; the one above is the figure on Discord’s own page, with the date it was read. If it changes, this page changes with it.
How it works
Open your video
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab; nothing is uploaded, so the original can be as large as you like.
20 MB is already set
The save window opens set to an MP4 under that size. Shycut works out the bitrate from your video’s length and shows what it will do before you save.
Save
If the video can’t fit at its own size, the picture steps down (1080p, 720p…) and the window says so. If nothing fits, it tells you how long a clip does, so you can trim first.

Questions
Why does Discord say my file is too big?
Because it is over 20 MiB, the limit for accounts without Nitro in servers without boosts. A file made here fits under it.
Do game clips at 60 frames a second fit?
They do, at a smaller picture or a shorter length than 30 fps footage: higher frame rates need more bits, and Shycut accounts for that.
Does this need a Discord bot or an account?
No. It runs in your browser; you send the finished file to Discord yourself.
Your video stays with you.
Open Shycut, drop the video in and export. Free, with no account, and your video never leaves your device.
