How often it gets a Dutch word wrong

Model in ShycutWord error rateRoughlyFrom the paper
Accurate (Whisper small)16.4%1 word in 6Table 13, “Whisper small” row, Dutch column · OpenAI
Fast (Whisper base)33%1 word in 3Table 13, “Whisper base” row, Dutch column · OpenAI

Word error rate is the share of words a model gets wrong (swapped, missed or added) against a human transcript, in OpenAI’s own test on the FLEURS speech set; lower is better.

Shycut runs these two models converted to work in a browser (with 8-bit or 4-bit weights on some devices), so its results can differ a little from the paper’s.

Accurate, or a lot of fixing

Dutch has the widest gap between the two models of any language Shycut offers a page for: 33% with Fast, 16.4% with Accurate, 50% fewer mistakes. Use Accurate for Dutch.

Even then, plan to read the subtitles through: Dutch comes ninth of 10 languages for accuracy, so names, numbers and borrowed words are worth a second look.
