The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.

When to turn M4V into MP3

An M4V made by your own apps or exported from a Mac usually holds AAC sound, which Apple devices play but some car stereos and older players don’t. MP3 removes that doubt.

Bought films and episodes are copy-protected and won’t open here. Your own M4V files open like any MP4, and their sound is saved at its own level.

Questions

Why not save it as M4A instead?

M4A keeps AAC sound in Apple’s format and is smaller at the same quality. Choose MP3 when the player is unknown or old.

Is an M4V the same as an MP4?

Nearly: it is MP4 under Apple’s extension, sometimes with copy protection added. Without protection, it opens here like any MP4.

Can I keep the chapters?

No. An MP3 made here carries the sound alone, without chapter marks.
