On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 WebM (VP9 video, Opus sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.
The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.
When to turn WebM into MP3
Opus, the sound inside most WebM files, is excellent, but not every player knows it: car stereos, older phones and some podcast tools want MP3.
The Opus sound is decoded and written again as MP3 at the quality you choose. It has to be a WebM with a picture: a WebM that holds sound alone, as some voice recorders make, won’t open here.
WebM and MP3, in short
- WebM
- Google’s open web format, with VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Opus or Vorbis sound. Browser screen recorders and many downloaded web videos come as WebM.
- MP3
- The sound format every device and app plays, from car stereos to podcast hosts. It is compressed, so files stay small and a little detail is traded away.
How to convert
Open the WebM
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.
MP3 is already chosen
The save window opens set to it. Change the file name or the quality if you like.
Save
The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.
What changes, what stays
- Picture
- Left out: only the sound is saved.
- Sound
- The first sound track, at its own level, in stereo at most.
- Quality
- Small 96 kbps · Balanced 160 kbps · High 256 kbps: a minute of MP3 at Balanced is about 1.2 MB.
- Details about you
- The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.
Questions
Why won’t my music player play WebM?
It most likely lacks an Opus or Vorbis decoder. MP3 is the one format such players always have.
Does going from Opus to MP3 lose quality?
Some, as moving between two compressed formats always does. Pick High to keep the loss small.
Can I convert a meeting recording?
Yes, if it is a WebM with video, as browser-based meeting recorders often save. The sound is kept at its own level.
