On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 MKV (H.264 video, AAC sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.
The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.
When to turn MKV into MP4
Screen recorders like to write MKV because a recording cut short by a crash or a full disk stays readable up to its last second. That safety stops paying off the moment you want to share it: many apps, sites and phones won’t open an MKV at all.
An MKV can carry several sound tracks and subtitles at once. The MP4 made here keeps the picture and the file’s main sound track; other sound tracks and subtitle tracks stay behind, so keep the MKV if you need them.
MKV and MP4, in short
- MKV
- Matroska, an open container that can hold several sound and subtitle tracks at once. Screen recorders and films use it; many phones, TVs and editing apps won’t open it.
- MP4
- The format that plays almost everywhere: phones, browsers, TVs, editing apps and every social platform take it. Inside is usually H.264 video and AAC sound.
How to convert
Open the MKV
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.
MP4 is already chosen
The save window opens set to it. Change the file name or the quality if you like.
Save
The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.
What changes, what stays
- Picture and length
- Nothing is cut or reframed: the video keeps its own picture size and runs from start to end.
- Sound
- The first sound track, at its own level, in stereo at most.
- Quality
- Small, Balanced or High; Balanced is chosen to begin with.
- Details about you
- The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.
Questions
Which sound track is kept from an MKV with several?
Only one: the file’s main sound track. Shycut doesn’t let you pick another, and the rest are not carried into the MP4.
Do MKV subtitles carry over?
No, subtitle tracks are not copied. If you want captions, open the video in the editor instead: Shycut can write new ones from the speech, on your device.
Will the MP4 play on an iPhone?
The test table shows what went into the MP4 in each browser; H.264 video with AAC sound is the pairing iPhones play.
