Tested in the browser
| Browser | Result | What came out |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome 155 | Converted | MP4: H.264 video, AAC sound, 1280×720 |
| WebKit 27.2 (Safari’s engine) | Converted | MP4: H.264 video, AAC sound, 1280×720 |
On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 MOV (H.264 video, AAC sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.
The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.
iPhones record HEVC video by default. A MOV like that converted in Google Chrome 155 and WebKit 27.2 (Safari’s engine).
When to turn MOV into MP4
MOV plays fine on Apple devices, but outside them it is hit and miss: a Windows laptop, an Android phone, a smart TV or a web form may refuse it, or play the sound over a black picture. MP4 with H.264 inside is the safe choice when you don’t know what the other side uses.
Converting here encodes the picture again, so an HEVC clip from an iPhone becomes H.264 that older computers decode too. Long recordings don’t have to squeeze through an upload first: the file is read from your disk and the new one is written back to it.
MOV and MP4, in short
- MOV
- Apple’s QuickTime format. iPhones and Macs save videos and screen recordings as MOV, and recent iPhones put HEVC video inside, which some computers and apps can’t play.
- MP4
- The format that plays almost everywhere: phones, browsers, TVs, editing apps and every social platform take it. Inside is usually H.264 video and AAC sound.
How to convert
Open the MOV
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.
MP4 is already chosen
The save window opens set to it. Change the file name or the quality if you like.
Save
The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.
What changes, what stays
- Picture and length
- Nothing is cut or reframed: the video keeps its own picture size and runs from start to end.
- Sound
- The first sound track, at its own level, in stereo at most.
- Quality
- Small, Balanced or High; Balanced is chosen to begin with.
- Details about you
- The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.
Questions
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
A little, as with any re-encode: the picture is compressed again. Pick High in the save window to stay as close as possible to the original; the picture size and length stay the same.
Can I convert an iPhone video recorded in HEVC?
Yes, where the browser decodes HEVC: the note under the test table says which tested browsers did. The result is H.264, which older computers play too.
Is there a file size limit?
Not from Shycut. Nothing is uploaded, so the only limits are your device’s free space and memory.
