On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 MP4 (H.264 video, AAC sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.
The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.
When to turn MP4 into WAV
Audio editors, transcription services and music software work best with WAV: nothing more is compressed away, and every one of them reads it.
WAV is big because nothing is thrown away; the size of a minute is worked out below. The sound is the video’s own, at its own sample rate, so a 48 kHz camera recording stays 48 kHz.
MP4 and WAV, in short
- MP4
- The format that plays almost everywhere: phones, browsers, TVs, editing apps and every social platform take it. Inside is usually H.264 video and AAC sound.
- WAV
- Uncompressed sound: every sample kept, nothing thrown away. Audio editors, transcription tools and music apps prefer it; the files are large.
How to convert
Open the MP4
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.
WAV is already chosen
The save window opens set to it. Change the file name if you like; there is no quality to pick.
Save
The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.
What changes, what stays
- Picture
- Left out: only the sound is saved.
- Sound
- The first sound track, at its own level, in stereo at most.
- Quality
- Uncompressed 16-bit sound at the video’s own sample rate: a minute of stereo at 48 kHz is about 11.5 MB.
- Details about you
- The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.
Questions
Is a WAV better quality than the MP4’s sound?
No better, but no worse: it holds the video’s sound exactly as decoded, without compressing it a second time.
Which bit depth is it?
16-bit, the depth every player and editor reads.
Can I clean up the sound first?
Yes: open the MP4 in the editor, turn on noise reduction, then save as WAV from there.
