On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 MOV (H.264 video, AAC sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.
The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.
iPhones record HEVC video by default. A MOV like that converted in Google Chrome 155 and WebKit 27.2 (Safari’s engine).
When to turn MOV into WAV
A MOV from an iPhone carries AAC sound, fine to listen to but not ideal to edit: every export compresses it again. A WAV hands your editor the decoded sound, so the next export is the only round of compression.
The sound keeps its own sample rate and level. Stereo stays stereo; anything with more channels is saved as two.
MOV and WAV, in short
- MOV
- Apple’s QuickTime format. iPhones and Macs save videos and screen recordings as MOV, and recent iPhones put HEVC video inside, which some computers and apps can’t play.
- WAV
- Uncompressed sound: every sample kept, nothing thrown away. Audio editors, transcription tools and music apps prefer it; the files are large.
How to convert
Open the MOV
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.
WAV is already chosen
The save window opens set to it. Change the file name if you like; there is no quality to pick.
Save
The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.
What changes, what stays
- Picture
- Left out: only the sound is saved.
- Sound
- The first sound track, at its own level, in stereo at most.
- Quality
- Uncompressed 16-bit sound at the video’s own sample rate: a minute of stereo at 48 kHz is about 11.5 MB.
- Details about you
- The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.
Questions
Is the MOV’s picture kept anywhere?
No: only the sound is saved. Keep the MOV if you want the video too.
Why is the WAV so much bigger than the MOV?
WAV stores sound uncompressed, while the MOV’s AAC is compressed. The size of a minute is worked out above.
Will it work with a long recording?
Nothing is uploaded, so length is limited only by your device’s free space, and a long WAV needs plenty of it.
