GoPro HERO11 GPS overlay
The HERO11 Black brought a new GPS format, GPS9, with time and fix quality in every reading, and kept GPS5 next to it. Shycut reads both and draws the ride gauge from them.

What a HERO11 Black records
What Shycut draws from it
- A ride gauge
- Speed, altitude, lean angle and g-force, read from the GPS9 data in the file and drawn into the video as it plays.
- Turned on by itself
- Open the video with the ride recipe and the gauge appears when the file carries GPS; choose what it shows and where in the Ride tab.
- Your route stays private
- The gauge never draws the map or coordinates, and the time near places you mark as private can be blurred or cut using the same GPS.
The generation that changed the format
GoPro describes GPS9 as more precise than GPS5 for time and fix information, and marks GPS5 as deprecated, “might not be in future cameras”. Tools that only read GPS5 work on a HERO11 today, but not on what comes after it.
The HERO11 samples GPS 10 times a second, a reading every 100 ms, against 18 on earlier cameras. For a speed gauge that is plenty: Shycut smooths the readings so the needle moves steadily rather than in steps.

Questions
Does the HERO11 record GPS?
Yes: GPS9 and, alongside it, the older GPS5, 10 times a second, according to GoPro’s documentation.
What is the difference between GPS5 and GPS9?
GPS9 adds the date, time and fix quality to every reading; GoPro calls it more precise for time and fix information.
Will my overlay tool work with the HERO11?
Shycut reads both formats. A tool that reads only GPS5 still works on the HERO11, but GoPro says GPS5 may not be in future cameras.
