GoPro HERO5 to HERO10 GPS overlay
From the HERO5 to the HERO10, GoPro’s cameras record the same GPS data, GPS5, 18 times a second. Shycut reads it from the file and draws a ride gauge on your own device.

What a HERO5 to HERO10 Black records
| What | Figure | GoPro’s words |
|---|---|---|
| GPS data | GPS5: position, altitude and speed | HERO5 Black with GPS Enabled Adds GoProHERO10 changes, otherwise supports All HERO9 metadata GoPro |
| Readings a second | 18 (one every 56 ms) | GPS5 latitude, longitude, altitude (WGS 84), 2D ground speed, and 3D speed 18 GoPro |
| Exception | HERO10 Black Bones: no GPS | BONES is a HERO10, but has no GPS board, so GPS5 will be missing GoPro |
What Shycut draws from it
- A ride gauge
- Speed, altitude, lean angle and g-force, read from the GPS5 data in the file and drawn into the video as it plays.
- Turned on by itself
- Open the video with the ride recipe and the gauge appears when the file carries GPS; choose what it shows and where in the Ride tab.
- Your route stays private
- The gauge never draws the map or coordinates, and the time near places you mark as private can be blurred or cut using the same GPS.
Six cameras, one kind of GPS
GoPro’s documentation lists the HERO6 to HERO10 as supporting everything the HERO5 records, GPS5 included, so one page covers them all. The HERO5 writes GPS once it is turned on; the HERO10 Black Bones, built without a GPS board, writes none.
Shycut’s ride gauge has been checked against real HERO6 footage: speed, altitude, lean angle and g-force come out of the GPS5 track, and the file’s chapters are joined first so the gauge runs across the whole ride.

Questions
Does my GoPro HERO9 record GPS for an overlay?
Yes. GoPro documents the HERO6 to HERO10 as recording the HERO5’s GPS5 data; make sure GPS is on in the camera.
Why is there no GPS in my HERO10 Bones footage?
GoPro says the Bones has no GPS board, so its files carry no GPS5.
Is my route shown on the video?
No. The gauge shows speed, altitude, lean and g-force, never the map or coordinates.
