Convert WebM to GIF

Browser recordings and web clips come as WebM, which many chat apps and documents won’t play inline. Drop one here and save a GIF that will.

On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 WebM (VP9 video, Opus sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.

The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.

When to turn WebM into GIF

A WebM needs a video player; a GIF only needs a place for a picture. That is why a GIF still works in email bodies, wikis and older chat tools that never show video inline.

Transparency doesn’t survive: a WebM sticker with a see-through background comes out on a solid one. For everything else, the loop looks as the recording did, in up to 256 colours a frame.

WebM and GIF, in short

WebM
Google’s open web format, with VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Opus or Vorbis sound. Browser screen recorders and many downloaded web videos come as WebM.
GIF
A looping picture with up to 256 colours per frame and no sound. It plays inline in chats, documents and READMEs, but long or large clips make heavy files.

How to convert

  1. Open the WebM

Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.

  2. GIF is already chosen

The save window opens set to it. Change the file name or the quality if you like.

  3. Save

The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.

What changes, what stays

Length
Up to 60 seconds; a longer video is cut off there.
Smoothness and size
Small: 10 frames a second, 480 px on the long side · Balanced: 12 frames a second, 640 px on the long side · High: 15 frames a second, 800 px on the long side
Sound
A GIF has none, so the sound is left out.
Details about you
The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.

Questions

Does a transparent WebM stay transparent?

No. Transparency isn’t kept, so the GIF has a solid background.

How smooth will the GIF be?

That follows the quality: Small, Balanced and High each use more frames a second and more pixels, as listed under “What changes, what stays”.

Can I make a GIF from a long recording?

Only of its first 60 seconds. Trim the recording in the editor to choose which part.
