Tested in the browser
| Browser | Result | What came out |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome 155 | Converted | GIF: no sound, 640×360 |
| WebKit 27.2 (Safari’s engine) | Converted | GIF: no sound, 640×360 |
On October 24, 2026, a 10-second 1280×720 MOV (H.264 video, AAC sound) went through this page’s button in each browser, and what came out was read back with ffprobe.
The test file carried a location tag; no converted copy kept it.
iPhones record HEVC video by default. A MOV like that converted in Google Chrome 155 and WebKit 27.2 (Safari’s engine).
When to turn MOV into GIF
Showing a bug, a gesture or a quick how-to works better as a loop than as a file someone has to download and open. A Mac screen recording turned into a GIF plays the moment it is seen.
Screen recordings, with their sharp text and flat colours, suit GIF well; camera footage with gradients and grain looks rougher in 256 colours. For camera clips, keep the GIF short and small.
MOV and GIF, in short
- MOV
- Apple’s QuickTime format. iPhones and Macs save videos and screen recordings as MOV, and recent iPhones put HEVC video inside, which some computers and apps can’t play.
- GIF
- A looping picture with up to 256 colours per frame and no sound. It plays inline in chats, documents and READMEs, but long or large clips make heavy files.
How to convert
Open the MOV
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab: nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload limit to hit.
GIF is already chosen
The save window opens set to it. Change the file name or the quality if you like.
Save
The new file is written on your device and downloaded. Several files? Drop them together and they are converted one after another.
What changes, what stays
- Length
- Up to 60 seconds; a longer video is cut off there.
- Smoothness and size
- Small: 10 frames a second, 480 px on the long side · Balanced: 12 frames a second, 640 px on the long side · High: 15 frames a second, 800 px on the long side
- Sound
- A GIF has none, so the sound is left out.
- Details about you
- The file is written from scratch, so none of the original’s metadata comes along: no location, no camera or phone model.
Questions
Can I record my screen and make a GIF in one go?
Yes: record with Shycut’s screen recorder, then save the recording as a GIF from the export window.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No, GIFs have no sound. Save an MP4 instead if the sound matters.
Why does my iPhone clip look blotchy as a GIF?
Each frame is squeezed into 256 colours, so smooth skies and skin show bands. A shorter, smaller GIF, or an MP4, shows them better.
