Compress a video to under 5 MB
5 MB is the tightest limit most people meet: forms, help desks and application portals. See how much video it takes, and compress yours to fit.

What fits in 5 MB
| Picture | At full quality | Longest that fits |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 6 s | 14 s |
| 720p | 14 s | 31 s |
| 540p | 25 s | 51 s |
| 480p | 31 s | 1 min 5 s |
| 360p | 51 s | 1 min 43 s |
Shycut’s own sums for a 16:9 video at 30 frames a second with sound, at Balanced quality. “Full quality” keeps the bitrate Balanced would use anyway; past “longest that fits”, Shycut makes the picture smaller instead of letting it break up. An upright video fits the same.
Your video, by length
| Length | Comes out as |
|---|---|
| 30 s | 720p, 1,152 kbps for the picture |
| 1 min | 480p, 512 kbps for the picture |
| 3 min | Too long: up to 1 min 43 s fits |
For a 1080p video at 30 frames a second with sound. The save window does the same sum for your own video before anything is made.
Working with a 5 MB cap
A cap this small takes a short clip, not a long one: the tables above show where the line falls at each picture size. Past it, Shycut makes the picture smaller rather than letting the image fall apart.
If your video runs longer than what fits, cut it down to the part that matters in the editor first. A screen recording of a bug or a short product clip is the kind of thing 5 MB is made for.
How it works
Open your video
Press the button and drop the file, or pick it from your files. It opens in this browser tab; nothing is uploaded, so the original can be as large as you like.
5 MB is already set
The save window opens set to an MP4 under that size. Shycut works out the bitrate from your video’s length and shows what it will do before you save.
Save
If the video can’t fit at its own size, the picture steps down (1080p, 720p…) and the window says so. If nothing fits, it tells you how long a clip does, so you can trim first.
Questions
Why does my 5 MB video look soft?
At this size the bits run out quickly, so Shycut lowers the picture size instead of smearing a full-HD frame. A shorter clip keeps more detail.
Does 5 MB mean 5,000,000 bytes?
Yes. Shycut counts a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes, the smaller of the two readings, so the file also fits a limit counted in MiB.
Can I send a longer video some other way?
If the form only takes 5 MB, trim the video to its key moment. Otherwise, send a link from your own cloud storage instead of the file.
